CHEMICAL PEEL BENEFITS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN

CHEMICAL PEEL BENEFITS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN

Do you ever feel that maybe there’s a fresher, younger-looking version of your face hiding just underneath your existing face? Maybe there is! And you can access it with a chemical peel. Put simply, chemical peels take off a top layer of skin, and with it, the imperfections on that layer, leaving you with the fresher face and younger skin you’ve been looking for. Take a look at some of the chemical peel benefits and what you need to know about deciding to get one.

CUT DOWN ON ACNE AND ACNE SCARS

Acne is very common. You shouldn’t feel alone if you suffer from it, because most people do deal with bouts of it at one point or another. Still, it can cause a lot of stress for people who are currently dealing with it, and unfortunately, some of the products meant to cover acne can actually contribute to the problem. Something is needed to treat the acne instead, and a chemical peel might do just that.

Chemical peels can decrease oil production, reduce inflammation, and kill acne-causing bacteria on your skin. It also breaks down comedonal acne that is caused by plugged hair follicles. And it can even help your skin better absorb the other products that you use to combat acne.

Maybe you don’t have acne anymore, but you have the scars that acne can leave on your skin. These can, unfortunately, be very obvious – either red, raised bumps, or depressed pits on your skin. These scars are caused by the production of new collagen fibers that arise in an attempt to repair the acne inflammations on your skin. Chemical peels remove excess collagen along with the top layer of skin, which means that they can remove some or all of the scarring.

REVERSE SIGNS OF AGING

We’re all getting older, whether we want to admit it or not. And one thing that happens when we get older is that signs of aging, like dryness, wrinkles, and lines, and age spots begin to show on the face.

Chemical peels can do some things to reverse the visible signs of the aging process. Chemical peels remove a top layer of skin, which will later regrow. This regrowth activates your skin to produce new collagen and elastin to keep your skin stronger and more elastic. This will help it retain its youthful appearance. Because the chemical peel removes small imperfections on the top layer, you’ll also grow back smoother skin, which can help with the issues of skin looking rough and dry. This will also help you look younger.

Don’t expect chemical peels to be a cure-all for aging. It won’t tighten sagging skin, and it won’t remove very deep wrinkles. However, it works well enough on surface-level signs of aging that it’s a simple way to make you look noticeably younger.

EASE ROSACEA AND HYPERPIGMENTATION

The name “rosacea” evokes redness, and sure enough, rosacea is a condition that causes redness, red bumps, and swelling on the face. Hyperpigmentation, on the other hand, is a patch of darker skin. Hyperpigmentation isn’t one single condition, it can be caused by a number of things, like age spots, freckles, sun damage, surgical or injury scars, and melasma.

Chemical peels can help with both rosacea and hyperpigmentation conditions. It balances texture, fades discoloration, and lifts scarring. Melasma can be particularly treatment-resistant, and chemical peels have even been shown to help in those cases.

MINIMIZE THE APPEARANCE OF PORES

Large pores can make your skin look older or damaged. They occur when skin gets clogged with oil, dead skin, or debris. Sun damage, hormones, or even just genetics or aging can also cause your pores to appear open.

There are plenty of makeup solutions meant to make your pores look smaller, but what about actually making them smaller? Chemical peels can do that. When you lift the outer layer of damaged skin – along with many of the things that cause larger pores, like dirt and oils – the effect is that your pores are minimized and that makes your skin look smoother and younger.

REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF CANCER

It’s unlikely that you’d think of a chemical peel as a preventative measure against cancer. But it might be just that if you have noticed rough, scaly spots on your skin called actinic keratosis. You might hear these called sunspots or even a type of age spot, but they’re really precancerous spots.

Actinic keratosis spots are not cancerous themselves. However, they can be pre-cancerous, meaning that eventually, they can lead to squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. However, having them removed can prevent them from turning into skin cancer. And one way to do that is with a deep chemical peel. So, as it turns out, a chemical peel can be an important way to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS

A chemical peel isn’t just one thing. There are several different types of chemical peels, and different ones are used for different things. It’s important to choose the one that you need for the purpose that you need.

Light chemical peels are the gentlest type. They remove only the epidermis and help with fine lines, acne, dry skin, and uneven skin tones. Your skin needs about a week to recover from a light chemical peel and you can get one every two to five weeks.

Medium chemical peels are stronger and remove both the epidermis and the top layer of the dermis behind the epidermis. They can help with wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tones. You’ll need up to two weeks to recover from a medium peel and it can take more than one treatment to achieve the results that you want.

Finally, there’s a deep chemical peel. Deep peels remove the epidermis and both the upper and middle layers of the dermis. A deep chemical peel is what you choose when you want to remove scarring, deeper wrinkles, or precancerous growths. Unlike light and medium chemical peels, a deep peel might be with a local anesthetic to reduce pain, and it can take two weeks with surgical dressings and pain medications for the skin to grow back and the swelling to subside. But it doesn’t need to be done often – unlike the light or medium chemical peels, the deep chemical peel effects can last up to 10 years.
