What Does Semaglutide Do To The Body?

What Does Semaglutide Do To The Body?

Semaglutide is a new FDA-approved treatment for weight management. It has been used to treat type II diabetes since 2017 and was sent into clinical trials to be approved for weight loss therapy. The average weight loss among the 1,961 participants averaged 14.9% of their initial body weight.

What Kind of Medication IsSemaglutide?

Semaglutide belongs to GLP-1 class of medication. GLP-1 is a hormone naturally produced by our body as a response to the presence of food in the stomach and is circulated throughout and received by receptors in the pancreas, intestines, heart, and brain. Unlike several other weight loss medications, semaglutide is used by different organs in distinctive ways to result in weight loss.

  • Semaglutide and Weight Loss

Semaglutide can be used to treat patients with a higher BMI and those with weight-related medical issues, like obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart/vascular disease. When semaglutide is circulated throughout the body, it interacts with our bodily organs to contribute to weight loss.

  • The Pancreas

Semaglutide, when it interacts with the pancreas, increases the secretion of insulin from the beta cells and enhances insulin sensitivity throughout the body. This means that sugar can be better moved out of the blood and into the cells and can be utilized for energy production, thus reducing the risk of diabetes.

  • The Gastrointestinal Tract

Semaglutide works in the GI tract by curbing hunger and slowing down gastric motility. It also slows down gastric motility and decreases acid production, thus reducing gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.

  • The Heart

Though semaglutide is commonly considered a safe medication for those with heart disorders like cardiovascular disease, some people may have an increase in heart rate after its intake. Those with a history of trouble with heart racing are advised to consult their doctor before starting semaglutide.

  • The Brain

In our brain, the hypothalamus is known to control hunger and satisfaction after food. Semaglutide influences the hypothalamus to improve feelings of fullness and change taste preferences, thus helping control food intake.

  • Our Metabolism

Semaglutide also benefits our bodily metabolism by stimulating fat oxidation, helping promote weight loss.

  • The Liver

Our liver can produce sugar through a process called gluconeogenesis. Semaglutide discourages this process and results in less circulation of blood sugar for the insulin to move into the cells.

All these changes are known to encourage one's weight loss.
